Convert WebP to AVIF

Turn WebP files into AVIF right in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Good to know

  • Quality starts at 82. If a site has an upload limit, set a target size and the converter finds the highest quality that fits.
  • AVIF encoding is slow, especially on phones. Large batches can take a few minutes.

About the formats

WebP is Google's web format. It handles both photos and transparent graphics and is usually smaller than JPG or PNG at the same visual quality. Every current browser supports it, though some older desktop apps don't.

AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec. It often beats WebP on file size, especially for photos, but encoding is slow and some older apps can't open it.

Questions

How do I convert WebP to AVIF?

Drop your WebP files on the box above, or tap it to pick them. AVIF is already selected, so conversion starts right away. Download each file, or grab them all as a ZIP.

Will converting WebP to AVIF reduce quality?

A little, because AVIF is lossy too. At quality 82 most people can't see a difference. Use Compare on a finished file to check before you download.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding and encoding run in your browser with WebAssembly. Open your browser's network panel while converting and you will see no image data leave the page.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 500 files per batch, each up to 256 MB. Download them one by one, as a ZIP, or save them straight into a folder in Chrome and Edge.

Is camera data like GPS location kept?

No. Output files are written fresh from the pixels, so EXIF data such as GPS position, camera model and date is dropped. Photos are rotated upright first, so nothing ends up sideways.
