Turn GIF files into AVIF right in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Good to know
Only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted.
Quality starts at 82. If a site has an upload limit, set a target size and the converter finds the highest quality that fits.
AVIF encoding is slow, especially on phones. Large batches can take a few minutes.
About the formats
GIF is limited to 256 colors and is mostly used for short animations. Still images look better and weigh less in other formats.
AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec. It often beats WebP on file size, especially for photos, but encoding is slow and some older apps can't open it.
Questions
How do I convert GIF to AVIF?
Drop your GIF files on the box above, or tap it to pick them. AVIF is already selected, so conversion starts right away. Download each file, or grab them all as a ZIP.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding and encoding run in your browser with WebAssembly. Open your browser's network panel while converting and you will see no image data leave the page.
How many images can I convert at once?
Up to 500 files per batch, each up to 256 MB. Download them one by one, as a ZIP, or save them straight into a folder in Chrome and Edge.
Is camera data like GPS location kept?
No. Output files are written fresh from the pixels, so EXIF data such as GPS position, camera model and date is dropped. Photos are rotated upright first, so nothing ends up sideways.
